General Information

The stories contained herein are of entirely fictitious elements. They were originally designed by Tiberius and Szabo and have since been expanded further and delineated by Tiberius. This page was created both to be of entertainment to those curious of Alterra's backstory as well as to those Alterrans and/or Legionnaires who are wishing to make a character biography that ties into Alterra's history.

History of Alterra

Imagine for a moment the world we have today. The economic giant, the EU; the rising superpower, China; the overpopulated India; the raging Middle East; sleeping South America; desperate Africa; and an economically unstable United States. If the fragile frame humanity has built itself upon were to but catch a gust of wind, the whole world could fall. And the Storm approaches.

Imagine an ever inclusive, ever stronger EU. Would America strengthen NAFTA to combat the economic war? Imagine a war in the Orient. Or perhaps an alliance. How would the West react if China had Japan, India, or Korea? In these days of Terror, what is to stop a desperate attempt to save a failing economy or to combat a potential foe? Who can stop the inevitable dawn of a New World Order?

And this New Order is cruel. And it is efficient. They make the sacrifices necessary to reach the top. But the world cannot be saved this way. The economy worsens, violence becomes dominant. Entire cities loose power as infrastructure, oil pipelines, electrical cables fail. In an attempt to save their supremacy, the New World Order's vicar bans all firearms from civilians. They collect nearly all ammo, guns, and gunpowder. The massive program takes years to complete. And people continue to starve.

In their despair, families and friends move together for protection. Fathers and sons raid museums, farms, and movie sets for any sort of weapon. Gangs fight for food and territory, until this New World Order appears to eliminate the entire region. In this time of greatest darkness, the star shines forth.

The Grandmasters, then just children, can no longer tolerate the cruelty of the world. A viridian star wakes in their dreams to become a beacon for all. And so, in a time of hatred and victims, friends and former foes  all come together in one dream of victory. Honor and Chivalry are born anew. And Alterra, despite its inferior size and armament, maintains a zone of safety and peace- finally breaking the hold of the NWO.

Before long, people flock to the light and Alterra grows, becoming a country, a continent, the world.

Timeline

Although the exact date is now forgotten, sometime in the early part of the 21st Century a terrible disaster known as the Twenty-Three Minute Decimation occurred. This sole event completely changed the route of history and destroyed a large chunk of the information in the world. As chaos unfolded, people began to refer to time as a displacement from that particular point in history. And as such, years were then marked as Post-Common Era, or PCE for short. Below is a general timeline of the events since the Twenty-Three Minute Decimation. We cannot attest to the perfect validity of the facts listed below, as our information and/or memory of such events may be faulted, however, we believe it will be a useful tool for those who have less knowledge of the sad times that have semi-recently transpired.

1 PCE – The Twenty-Three Minute Decimation: A nuclear missile was fired from somewhere in the south Pacific and completely eradicated Beijing. Reacting immediately, China attempted to destroy the major cities of all its enemies. The United States shot down countless missiles as they flew over its borders, but through all its efforts it could not save Washington DC, New York City, and a number of other major cities. An emergency meeting was called by the UN, where a disarmament treaty was signed by all the nations that ended the attacks. However, the damage had already been done. In their desperation, the leaders of the now crippled nations elected a single man to preside over them and regulate the actions of the world—for peace, of course. The UN slowly changed, grew, and increased in power. Eventually it was clad in white and red and emblazoned with the golden lettering of the New World Order.

2 PCE – As result of the millions of tons of soot released during the Three Minute Decimation, the temperature over large areas of North America and Eurasia, including most of the grain-growing regions, declined by a few degrees. Those few degrees were enough to drastically reduce the amount of grain produced, which cast much of the world into a famine with which the NWO could hardly combat.

4 PCE – Fearing any sort of rebellion, the president of the NWO passed a law requiring all firearms to be confiscated by the government. From that point on, it was illegal to own any sort of firearm or ammunition. This made a number of people unhappy, and many citizens and New World Order agents alike lost their lives in the NWO’s struggle for complete control. This process took an estimated five years to complete, and by the end firearms were a magical item of the past.

Winter of 5 PCE – By this point, individual nations had all but ceased to exist. Their governmental infrastructure and their respective economies had dwindled into nothing—and had then been woven into the seemingly omnipresent web of the New World Order. Vast numbers of rules and regulations were passed by the nervous rulers of the NWO, fearing their grip on the world would soon slip. People forsook their technical jobs and instead began to work with their hands, growing enough food to support their family. They banded together in small communities, helping one another. The second Dark Age of mankind had begun.

April 13th, 6 PCE – Szabo and Tiberius met and became fast friends, sharing their mutual dislike of the New World Order. Alterra was born and began to operate underground, in the slums of a dying city. They worked as a guerilla faction for a time, content with merely hindering the NWO and saving anyone they can. Alterra began to grow and soon became too large to hide in the city.

Summer of 7 PCE – Ludi Primae Lucis I: Alterra fled its hiding place in the city and established residence in an uninhabited, but perfectly habitable, region of North America.

April 25th, 9 PCE – Ludi Primae Lucis II: For the first time since its establishment, Alterra took openly offensive action against the NWO. The First Legion of Alterra marched against a nearby NWO outpost. Though many lives were lost in the struggle, Alterra managed to overthrow the NWO’s hold on the area and used their technology to broadcast a famous radio signal. Two important things happened because of this: people were awakened to the fact that there was a unified front against the tyranny of the NWO, and many joined the Legions, but in addition to this, the NWO also became aware of Alterra and redoubled its efforts to crush the rising rebellion in its infancy.

Summer of 9 PCE – The Second Legion of Alterra seceded from the realm and established itself as its own realm, now known as Haven. Iohn, the leader of Haven (and previously the Commander of the Second Legion) was an old friend of Grandmaster Tiberius, and they and their respective nations remained good friends and allies.

9 PCE – Following the Second Ludi Primae Lucis, Alterra engaged the NWO in numerous skirmishes and battles. Many lives were lost on both sides, but neither were any closer to defeat or victory.

February 14th, 10 PCE – Alterra launched a quick strike against the NWO that resulted in a bloody victory known as the War for the Roses.

April, 10 PCE - Alterra was called to the aid of a nearby nation, Ardania, which was under attack by the NWO. Alterra responded as quickly as possible, but the weather and other terrible incidents delayed them. Tiberius had to leave the battle force and return to Alterra's citadel in order to tend to his romantic inclination of the time, Aerolyn, who had been direly injured. The Legions of Alterra managed to rescue the princess of Ardania, the last surviving member of the royal line, but were unable to eradicate the NWO's hold on her country. With the princess safe in their ranks, a battled and bloodied company of Alterrans returned to their homeland. Ludi Primae Lucis III was a terrible tradgedy in the history of Alterra and her battles with NWO.

February , 11 PCE - Alterra once again launched an offensive against the NWO that still inhabited the nearby region of Ardania, in an attempt to test their general strength. Though this battle was as bloody as the first War for the Roses, it was mostly NWO blood that was spilled this time around. Thus was fought the Second War for the Roses.

May 29th, 11 PCE - Having realized their incredible increase in power, Alterra did not delay in assembling a host to once again enter Ardanian territory. The Legions hoped to sweep through the lands like a wildfire, eradicating the NWO outposts before reinforcements could arrive. With the Princess of Ardania still safe in Alterra's capital city, Tiberius led Legion I of Alterra with his Champion Alexander and the Commander Metelo to a glorious victory. Little blood was spilt of those clad in black and green, but the white and red suffered a total defeat. Not a single NWO warrior was left living in Ardanian territory. Once the land was declared safe, Tiberius returned to Alterra and escorted the princess himself to her lands. She was overjoyed to see her people liberated, and the Kingdom of Ardania was reborn. Alterra left a small regiment of warriors behind to help protect Ardania as they rebuilt.
