Organization

Legions and Squads

The unit as a whole is divided into Legions, which are then further divided into Squads. There is no minimum or maximum membership to either Legions or Squads. Legions are named by Roman Numeral (e.g. Legion IV and Legion LXII) while Squads are named by a combination of their Legion name and a greek letter (e.g. "Delta IV" would be the Delta Squad of Legion IV).

Individual and Military Ranks

The ranks in the Legions of Alterra are organized in two different ways: individual ranks and military ranks.

The individual ranks are obtained by each legionnaire by performing certain tasks along the Path to Knighthood.  The individual ranks are: page, squire, knight, knight of the oak, knight of the raven, and knight of the star.  Individual ranks were created so that officers can easily ascertain the general fighting abilities of those fighting beneath them, especially if those legionnaires are from different regions.  They are also present as an incentive for legionnaires to perfect their fighting abilities and to have something to show for their accomplishments.  Additionally, legionnaires may not be officers until they have obtained knighthood.  Individual ranks are displayed by star patches on the right shoulder of the Legion Tabard.

Military ranks differ from individual ranks in two ways: they cannot be “earned” by completing certain tasks, and they actually empower a legionnaire to issue commands.  The military ranks are as follows (from least to greatest): legionnaire, captain, commander, and grandmaster.  The ranks of captains, commanders, and the grandmaster are collectively referred to as “officers.”  The Legions themselves are divided into legions, which are then further divided into squads.  The unit itself is lead by the grandmaster; his word is law.  Legions are lead by a single commander and are composed of any number of squads.  Legions are usually localized in a certain geographic area, such as a city.  Squads are lead by a single captain and are composed of any number of legionnaires. Military ranks are displayed by star patches on the left shoulder of the Legion Tabard.
