History of the Legions

General Information

This page is dedicated to the actual history of the Legions--when they started, who started them, and how they've grown. If you are looking for the fictional history of the unit, you should click the Storyline link in the navigation bar.

In the Beginning

When I was only 14 and a freshman in high school, a boy moved in to the house next to mine. I had only been living in my house in Oklahoma for a few months, and had not yet made any really strong friendships. However, this new neightbor and I hit it off and we have been best friends ever since. You probably know him as Szabo.

After I told him about Dagorhir, we spent hours and hours together, planning and discussing what we wanted to do with our Chapter and our Unit. At that time, there were no other Dagorhir Chapters even remotely close to us, so there was no one to help us out. Neither of us had ever even been to a Dagorhir battle, so all we had to go on was what we could learn online.

I'll freely admit that we made a number of mistakes in the early days; we were both stubborn as hell and wanted everyone to follow our Vision. But hey, that's the way of things and I think its all turned out fine. We grew and we learned, and so did the Legions.

The First Legionnaires

Before Alterra had even become an official Dagorhir chapter (which did not happen until around my 16th birthday), we began recruiting people to our glorious unit. The first to join were our siblings and close friends: Nemo, Sieg, Ruri (Szabo's sister), and Maeglin (who was then called Roxas). As time passed, Szabo and I continued to recruit new members to our backyard practices. Unfortunately, almost none of those fighters still play Dagorhir, as they have moved on to other things.

Alterra Rising

With the birth of Alterra as an official chapter of Dagorhir on April 13th, 2006, many people joined the Legions (as it was at the time the only unit in Alterra). It was during this time that a number of people also attained the rank of Knighthood, such as Macabre, O'Neal, Venice, Alexander, Metelo, and Necavi, to name a few. Most practices consisted of "Star Battles", as at that time the Legions were organized much differently than they are now. Squads had 5 members, Stars had a max of 25, Centuries had a max of 100, and Legions had a max of 500. A ton of fun was had during these early days, though there was also strife due to the stringent regulations of the Legions. Szabo and I had created our child to act like a true military--but unfortunately that does not work well in Dagorhir. It took us a few years of trial and error before that lesson finally sunk in (we hoped against hope that we could make our unit work how it was originally planned, but alas it was not to be).

Ludi Primae Lucis

Ludi Primae Lucis, "the Festival of the First Light," was originally held as the 16th birthday party for myself. After that year, we decided to make it an annual festival in honor of not only my birthday, but also that of Szabo and of Alterra herself. It was at this event that the title of the first Weaponmaster was given-- to Nemo of Legion I.

The First Battle

Alterra and her Legions (then consisting of Legion I in Oklahoma and Legion II in Missouri) made their first regional appearance on the Dagorhir battlefield at an event held by their nearest neighbors, the Dominion of the Unconquered Sun. That first battle was the War of the Iron Fist IV. Fun times were had by all, and each of the attendees learned an insurmountable amount of things about Dagorhir, from foamsmithing, to garb, to Dagorhir culture, to fighting. It was after this event that shields became vastly more popular amongst the warriors of Alterra.

A Growing Force

The Legions of Alterra asserted its place as a contending unit in Dagorhir during Ragnarok XXIII, where the knowledge of the Legions was vastly expanded. As with the attendees of War IV, the attendees of Ragnarok XXIII all gained a vast amount of experience and returned with countless stories of glory and fun times.

The Secession of Legion II

The Commander of Legion II at that time was Iohn de Mar, a very old friend of mine (and in fact the person who introduced me to the wonderful sport of Dagorhir). He had been trying for a long time to get his Chapter together, but when Alterra was founded Szabo and I offered him the opportunity to instead join our unit. He gladly accepted and we had many good times, both of the Legions growing. But after some time, Iohn and the other members of Legion II decided that they wanted to move in a slightly different direction than the Legions were at that time. So with friendly farewells they founded the Dagorhir chapter of Haven, which has always been a close ally to Alterra. Iohn and the other members of the late Legion II still maintain a strong friendship with myself and the rest of the Legions of Alterra.

The Founding of Legion III

Being once more filled with the fires of manifest destiny, I spoke with another old friend of mine who now lived in Connecticut. After much discussion, Szabo and I decided to once more offer a distant person the opportunity to found a new Legion of Alterra. Mordan Ventress (then named Tristan) became the Commander of Legion III and began to nurture it into the power it has become now.

The Death of Grandmaster Szabo Erinach

After the High Conclave of Alterra voted to abolish itself and instate a different governing body, Szabo and Venice travelled to Italy for a semester abroad. During this time they decided that they had outgrown their characters and no longer wished to play them or hold positions of power in the Legions. Thus passed away Grandmaster Szabo Erinach and his fiance Venice Vedette. As could be expected, I was very sorrowful that my oldest ally would no longer stand beside me in battle. Nonetheless, I was not ready to allow the Legions to faulter, so I took a deep breath and a step forward, reorganizing them entirely.

Alterra and Her New Legions

With Alterra becoming more like other Dagorhir chapters (multi-unit oriented), and me no longer acting as one of the two primary administrators of the realm, I was able to focus my attention almost entirely on the Legions. I reorganized the way in which they were constructed, abolishing the old min/max rules and simplifying the Legions into only Legions and Squads. I also created new ranks and awards of honor, as well as further described the storyline of the Legions. It was during this time that slaved for hours and hours until I had finally produced the Legionnaire's Handbook (with some help from Alexander, Szabo, and a few others).

A Bright New Future

Now the Legions are at a prime time to grow into the powerhouse they were destined to become. I ask for your help in making the Legions a better, stronger unit. Work with me and our fellow Legionnaire's, and we will turn the Legions into a legacy that will resound throughout the history of Dagorhir as one of the greatest units it has ever witnessed.

Stand with me. Embrace the viridian Star. Let us now inherit our Destiny!
